Biography

Choreographer/Artistic Director of Gleich Dances, based in NYC, Julia has received critical notice in the New York Times, Village Voice, DanceInsider and others. She has choreographed over 40 works including ballet, contemporary works, musical theatre, site-specific works, television and fashion. Regular commissions for choreography across the USA include Island Moving Company, Newport, RI and University of California at Irvine.

Julia has worked as rehearsal assistant/ballet mistress for Utah Ballet, Tri-Cities Opera, Ballet West, Roberson Ballet Theatre. Performance includes: US regional ballet and modern companies, musical theatre and opera, and ballet busking at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

  • MFA University of Utah; Thesis: Ballet Choreography Using Contemporary Choreographic Techniques
  • MA Bolz Center for Arts Administration, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Thesis: Labor Conditions in Dance
  • BA Mathematics, Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY

Teaching Experience

Master teacher for Arts on the Hill Dance Festival, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, National Association of Dance and Affiliated Artists and Burklyn Ballet Theatre (also Co-Director of Young Choreographers Workshop). Has been on faculty at University of Utah, Manhattanville College, Molloy College.

Awards

Papers presented at CORPS de Ballet International annual conferences.

Research interests: philosophy of ballet teaching; use of language in ballet pedagogy; male/female movement affinities and perceptions in ballet; making movement part of the elementary/primary classroom.
