Programme Details

• The MA Creative Practice is a one year (full time) or two year (part time) taught programme, culminating in an independent research project.
• The MFA Creative Practice is a two year full time programme. It shares the first year taught programme with the MA. An extended independent project forms the second year, providing time for in-depth research and realisation of a substantial body of work.

Teaching and Learning

Hours

• MA Creative Practice – 1800 notional learning and teaching hours with average contact time of approximately 55 hours per module.
• MFA Creative Practice – 2600 notional learning and teaching hours with average contact time of approximately 55 hours per module. Supervisory contact during the extended project will be arranged in consultation with your project supervisor, located at key points in the development of your research.
• Hours will vary depending on your selected modules, please refer to individual module specifications to determine precise number of hours per module.

How will I learn?

Depending on the modules you select, learning will take place in a variety of different contexts including:

• taught sessions or lectures
• workshops
• seminars
• in studio tutorials
• individual study and research
• reflection and peer review through sharing of practice
• theoretical study

Teaching embraces different learning styles, allowing for a flexibility of response to your needs and abilities. The introduction of visiting lecturers and artists allows you to encounter a variety of views and approaches from current fields of practice.

How will I be assessed?

• Practical presentation and supporting documentation

Usually, following a practical assessment task, there will be an opportunity to discuss the outcome with tutors. This is normally led by tutors but also includes opportunities for peer involvement.

• Essay or proposal

In some modules, the assessment task is wholly written in the form of an essay or proposal and does not include a practical component.

Entry Requirements

• an appropriate first degree (or an equivalent qualification)
• or 5 years’ professional experience
• Applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements are subject to the Institution’s recognition of prior learning (RPL) process

Who is this course for?

The Transdisciplinary pathway welcomes artists and creative practitioners at varying stages of their career. Applicants may have backgrounds in physical theatre, design, film, visual and live art, contemporary performance or circus. The programme is particularly suited to multi-faceted artists wishing to pursue portfolio careers that might include performance and performance-making, teaching, movement direction, and multimedia and cross art practice. As part of the application process, you’ll be asked to tell us about your current practice, where you envision it going and how postgraduate study at Trinity Laban will help you get there.

For MFA:

Applicants will also be required to submit an initial project proposal, outlining the following:

• The reasons they wish to carry out an independent project over one academic year
• Their suitability for extended independent research in the context of an MFA Creative Practice
• The nature of their intended research and a draft projected timeline with indicated outputs of research (which is understandably subject to change)

An interview (phone/Skype interview is acceptable) will also be required.

English Language Requirements

Applicants for whom English is not their first language should demonstrate proficiency in English equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all four areas. In addition, meeting external requirements of UK Visas and Immigration is essential.

Fees and Finance

Home student tuition fees are aligned with the maximum tuition fee cap set by the UK Government.  International tuition fees are subject to annual inflationary increases based on RPI-X.

Alumni Destinations

Alumni have gone on to careers as performers, choreographers, visual, film, and multi-media artists, writers and teachers. They have had their work programmed in international festivals and performance platforms, pursued further study and published research in peer-reviewed journals.

The process of completing my MFA pushed my creative practice to a place I wouldn’t have imagined. The commitment and perseverance the programme requires is a skill that is hard to master. With the help of fellow students, my tutors, and the design of the modules, I learnt the resilience and diversity that it takes to emerge from Trinity Laban as a professional artist and researcher.
