Chris West was the solo double bass player with the Guildhall Strings from 1991. With them he has appeared in major venues around the world from Carnegie Hall, New York to the National Concert Hall, Taipei. The Guildhall Strings have made many recordings for BMG/RCA and Hyperion, as well as broadcasting regularly for the BBC. In 2005 Chris premiered a new concerto at the Brighton Festival written for him and the Guildhall Strings by Matthew Taylor. Outside the group, Chris appears regularly as guest principal with many of Britain's major orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-fields and English Chamber Orchestra. He has given over 120 recitals as part of Yehudi Menuhin's Live Music Now! Scheme. In recent years Chris has been involving himself more in teaching. He enjoys his work as Professor of Double Bass at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London and is invited to give masterclasses around Europe.Chris is married to the clarinettist Emma Johnson. He provided several of the arrangements for her best-selling CD for Universal Classics, Voyage, which spent six months on the classical charts reaching number 3, and for her subsequent Mozart album. He has also conducted repertoire from these albums in concert. After studying at Cambridge University, he won a postgraduate scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music supported by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust where he studied with Duncan McTier, and was sub-principal in the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera for two years. He plays on a double bass made by Giovanni Battista Ceruti in Cremona in the 18th century.
