External examiners are a key element of our quality assurance processes. They help to ensure that:

  • assessment methods are appropriate and measure student achievement against the intended outcomes of the programme;
  • assessment is fair and just, operated in line with the institutional regulations and – for validated provision – those of the validating university;
  • appropriate academic standards are set and maintained; and
  • standards are comparable with similar awards conferred by other institutions.

External examiners also contribute to the development of programmes and our learning and teaching practices.

Information and guidance for external examiners

The primary reference document for external examiners is the Trinity Laban External Examiners’ Handbook, written to complement the information available in the Academic Quality Handbook.
