Trinity Laban Alumni at Dance Umbrella 2018

Several dance graduates will feature at London’s international dance festival this year.

Trinity Laban alumnus Emma Gladstone is Artistic Director & Chief Executive of Dance Umbrella, an organisation that aims to nurture dance artists, develop choreographic talent and engage audiences. This autumn their annual international festival returns to the capital 26 September – 21 October 2018 to celebrate twenty-first century choreography.

At Dance Umbrella 2018 choreographer and alumnus Janine Harrington will be presenting Screensaver Series on 9 October, a kaleidoscopic dance and sound installation responding to the algorithms used to create screensavers. Performing in the work are Trinity Laban graduates Elisa Vassena, Stella Papi, Louise Tanoto, and Vanessa Abreu. They are joined by fellow alumni Christopher MatthewsLuke Birch and Katja Nyqvist, who appear on screen in an accompanying film. Janine Harrington’s other upcoming projects include The Human Clock at Sånafest (23-30 June) and Sadler’s Wells presents: STACK at the Wilderness Festival (4th August).

Also involved in Dance Umbrella this year are alumni Camilla Isola and Claudia Palazzo who will perform across three outdoor spaces during October in Sasha Milavic Davies & Lucy Railton’s everything that rises must dance, a large-scale dance theatre work exploring female movement and identity.

And on Wednesday 10 October Dr Olu Taiwo, Trinity Laban alumnus and now Senior Lecturer in Performing Arts at University of Winchester, will join two other industry specialists at Shoreditch Town Hall for Dance Umbrella’s Out of the System panel discussion Beyond the 3T’s – Tick Box / Token / Tolerated, debating what ideas and practices might be able to shift mindsets.
