find out moreThe MA in Music Education and Performance is designed for any student wishing to pursue an active career as both a professional musician and a teacher or educator. It aims to equip you with the necessary musical skills, insight and experience required by the contemporary profession in its widest sense, with a focus on the artist in educational settings, from instrumental and/or vocal teaching to workshop leading.
This programme can be taken on a full-time intensive basis for four terms (15 months, Sept 2021 – Dec 2022) or on a part-time basis over seven terms (27 months, Sept 2021 – Dec 2023). The programme is auditioned and accepts students in composition and classical or jazz performance. Teacher-artists in other genres will be more suited to the Teaching Musician Programme, which shares some modules with the MA MEP.
This is an intensive four-term full-time or seven-term part-time programme which equips graduates to work in a variety of educational settings with a broad range of pedagogical approaches coupled with a firm instrumental/vocal technique and high quality musicianship.
Programme Content
Learning within a community of practice
The MA MEP offers the opportunity to become part of, and learn within, a diverse cohort of musicians and educators, and some modules are shared with the MMus and Teaching Musician programmes, permitting students to form communities across the institution with those training as performers and with experienced music educators seeking to refine and contextualize their practice. You will network and share learning with other practitioners and employers working across a variety of settings. This includes opportunities to engage with Trinity Laban’s Learning and Participation programme which offers a range of innovative outreach, community projects, and out of school learning activities, subject to availability. Teaching staff for the MA MEP are highly experienced practitioners, teachers and researchers from across the UK. A number of the team teach at other leading Higher Education Institutions and join Trinity Laban specifically to teach on this and the Teaching Musician programme.
Performance teaching and opportunities
All students will take a professional studies module at minimum level 6 (graduate/LTCL/LRAM level) with one-to-one lessons and an assessed recital, and will be hosted by departments (voice, strings, wind brass & percussion, jazz, piano, composition) with their associated classes and ensemble opportunities; additionally, students will have the option of second study lessons. The programme accepts students from the disciplines of composition and classical and jazz performance. The college has a rich and diverse performance programme, and students are welcome to join the various orchestras, choirs and ensembles, subject to audition.
The programme enables graduates to pursue a portfolio professional career in music education and performance as teachers, community musicians, instrumentalists, vocalists and/or composers. It seeks to prepare students to work in a variety of educational settings with a broad range of pedagogical approaches coupled with a firm instrumental/vocal technique and high quality musicianship. On completion of the award you will have developed a secure artistic personality and consolidated a range of performance, teaching and leadership skills. As an emerging teacher-artist you will have created music in a variety of settings, with a range of participants of different abilities, and in relation to a range of audiences. You will also have gained an understanding of the role of the musician in the contemporary cultural education infrastructure. Through your practice in music performance and teaching you will develop collaborative and entrepreneurial skills in support of a professional career.

Assessment methods as far as possible mirror professional contexts. There are a wide range of assessment tasks in the programme, from a recital (Professional Studies) to a video of teaching (Theory into Practice 3) to case studies, a viva and essays. Some modules rely on practical assessment, including Professional Studies and Research Methods in Education, and the Specialist Options will feature a blend of written and practical assessment methods (including, but not exclusive to essay, analysis, composition, improvisation, teaching assessment, practical group leadership etc.) Many assessments will focus on employability skills and knowledge.
The programme assessment strategy involves a trajectory of increasingly personalised options of increasing weight, with peer-to-peer support through forums and occasional team-working (e.g. on the Creative Project and CoLab), and staff support through supervisions in the more student-led modules. Many tasks are dependent on professional practice as an educator, and students will be supported in finding the appropriate experience
The audition comprises a performance / composition audition and interview, through which applicants will be expected to demonstrate the potential for professional development. All applicants must demonstrate their suitability for advanced performance or composition training, the ability to make sophisticated stylistic and interpretative evaluations of musical texts, and a level of intellectual enquiry appropriate to level 7 (postgraduate) study.
English at IELTS 6.5 in all 4 areas, Trinity ISE III or equivalent is required for international students.
