Trinity Laban Soloists’ Competition 2018 winner to perform at Cadogan Hall

Wed 18 April 2018

Post-graduate Helena Švigelj will perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor with Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra at the world-renowned London concert venue.

As the winner of the Soloists’ Competition 2018 – one of the most popular and prestigious competitions in the Trinity Laban music calendar – young Slovenian cellist Helena Švigelj will take to the Cadogan Hall stage on 22 June with the conservatoire’s Symphony Orchestra to perform one of the cornerstones of the solo cello repertoire.

A must-see highlight of the Trinity Laban summer season, the Symphony Orchestra’s finale concert will be conducted by Jessica Cottis who has been hailed by the UK press as “one to watch”. Programmed alongside Elgar’s concerto is Shostakovich’s dynamic 1953 Symphony No.10 in E minor, Op 93.

Ahead of the concert Švigelj comments –

“Winning the Soloists’ Competition 2018 is a great honour that I feel very excited to have achieved. I have always dreamt about playing Elgar’s Cello Concerto with a symphony orchestra. My success would not have been possible without the support of Trinity Laban, in particular from my professor David Cohen, who always gives the best advice.”

The final of this year’s Soloists’ Competition was held on 26th February at Blackheath Halls and saw three outstanding student soloists from across the music faculty compete for the opportunity to perform a concerto at Cadogan Hall.

The evening’s adjudicating panel – percussionist Colin Currie and Trinity Laban Director of Music Dr Claire Mera-Nelson – named Švigelj the winnerfollowing her impressive rendition of Elgar’s Cello Concerto accompanied by collaborative pianist Irina Lyakhovskaya.

As well as winning Trinity Laban’s 2018 Soloists’ Competition, Švigelj has won several international prizes including First Prize at the Cavatina Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition 2017 alongside fellow students Heather Stewart (violin), and Amos Lucidi (piano) as part of The Nemesis Trio.
