Biography

Dr Christina Siomos is currently undertaking a PhD in Music Performance Science entitled, “The Athletic Virtuoso: a biomechanical analysis of the practising and performing violinist and its correlation to the development of playing-related injury”. This PhD is generously funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council as part of the project, “Musical Impact: Enhancing the Health and Well-being of Musicians”, and will focus on the biomechanical demands of practising and performing, using the violin as a “model” instrument to investigate how these demands relate to the development of playing-related injuries in musicians in order to inform and enhance our understanding of the underlying pathological processes involved in such injuries.

It is hoped that this novel understanding will lead to more effective preventative strategies, as well as to improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of playing-related injuries in musicians, thus enhancing the well-being and performance potential of these virtuosic artists. Christina brings to this PhD her unique background as both a medical doctor and a professionally trained violinist, calling upon her extensive medical knowledge and taking advantage of her in-depth understanding of violin playing technique and repertoire, as well as the physical and psychological demands inherent to being an instrumentalist musician.
