Alison Curtis-Jones joined the teaching faculty at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 2003. Ali teaches across all programmes, and is Component Leader for Choreological Studies, Teaching Technique and Teaching Studies on the Undergraduate Programme and One Year Professional Diploma Programme. She also teaches Creative Strategies on the MA Dance Theatre: The Body in Performance. She was Artistic Director of ‘Conditioned Reflex Dance Company’ (2000-2003), her choreography has been shown in Britain, France and Germany. Ali’s research includes the recreation of Rudolf Laban’s iconic works Die Nacht, (1927) renamed The Night 2010, and Die Grunen Clowns, (1928) re-named Green Clowns, re-created in 2008 and 2009 for Laban Historical Project Undergraduate students. She also re-created the work in a collaborative project with BA3 students and Transitions Dance Company for the Laban International Conference, held at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 2009, and with Transitions Dance Company for Laban Conferences in Manchester and Dartington in the same year. Ali presented a lecture and demonstration on the recreation process of Green Clowns at a celebratory conference on Rudolf Laban, held in Rome, Italy in 2009. She was Key Speaker at the Trinity Laban Guild Conference, at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, 2009, where she also gave a lecture demonstration and led workshops based on the process of recreation and her practical research. Her written paper, Historical Recreation and Current Practice: what is the relevance of Laban’s work for today’s dance artist? is published in Movement and Dance Magazine, Spring 2009. She has taught workshops on her approach to the embodiment and application of Laban principles and methodologies at Bedford University and was invited to Roehampton University in March 2010, to lead workshops in facilitating expressivity in movement. Ali has also delivered workshops exploring William Forsythe’s Improvisation Technologies and his use of Laban’s Choreutic Operations. Ali is presenting her current research at the Laban Conference in Ascona, Switzerland in October 2011. This includes the development of her approach to the technical training of dancers through the application and embodiment of Laban principles and choreological perspectives. Ali has worked with a number of choreographers including Louise Richards of Motionhouse, Gaynor Coward of The Cholmondeleys, Louise Katerega of Foot in Hand Dance Company and Kerry Nicholls of k/n/d/c.
Qualifications / Educational Background
Ali graduated from Trinity Laban with a BA(Hons) in Dance Theatre and later gained her MA in European Dance Theatre Practice. She has a PGCE in Dance and is an experienced practitioner in teaching, performance and creative contexts.
Ali has taught internationally and has extensive experience of teaching INSET and workshops for teachers.
Alison is a former AQA Team Leader and AQA AS/A'Level Dance Examiner and External Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance, London.
